You can sponsor your family if you are:

• at least 18 years old
• a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• not receiving social assistance that is not related to disability
• can provide for the basic needs of the family members you are sponsoring

You may not be able to sponsor your family if you:

• are in default of an immigration loan, performance bond, or family support payments
• receive social assistance for a reason other than a disability
• are going through bankruptcy
• are under a removal order
• have been convicted of a crime

You definitely cannot sponsor your family if you:

• are in a penitentiary, jail, reformatory or prison
• were sponsored by a spouse or partner and you became a permanent resident less than 5 years ago
• sponsored a previous spouse or partner who became a permanent resident less than 3 years ago
• have already applied to sponsor your current spouse, partner or child and a decision on your application hasn’t been made yet
