SPONSOR YOUR OTHER RELATIVES
Which relatives can you sponsor to Canada?
Typically, a permanent resident or Canadian citizen can sponsor his/her (a) spouse or common-law/conjugal partner, (b) dependent children, and (c) parents and grandparents.
In addition to these family members, you can sponsor the following relatives subject to certain conditions:
- sibling/half-sibling – if he/she is under 18 years old, orphaned, and single
- nephew/niece – if he/she is under 18 years old, orphaned, and single
- adopted child – if he/she is under 18 years old, single, and meets adoption guidelines
- any other relative – only if you are completely alone in Canada without any family member
What financial support do you need to provide for your relatives?
You must be able to show that you have the financial capability to support your relative’s living expenses including basic needs and health needs not covered by public health insurance, by signing an undertaking with the Canadian government.
The length of undertaking (the period for which you are financially responsible for them) for your adopted child is 10 years or until the day he/she turns 22 years old, whichever comes first. For all other relatives, the length of undertaking is 10 years.
How long is the processing time and what are the processing fees?
Processing time for Parent and Grandparent sponsorships is approximately 20-24 months from the day a complete application is accepted by the visa office. This may change based on the volume of applications being processed.
The processing fee and right of permanent resident fee for each adult relative is C$1,050. The processing fee for each dependent relative (under 22 years old) is C$150.
What are the key considerations in submitting an application?
The requirements might look simple on paper, but often applications are rejected because the documents submitted were inaccurate, incomplete, or non-compliant. Here are some key considerations when applying to sponsor relatives to Canada:
- Are you eligible to sponsor your relative?
- How do you show your ability to support your relatives financially?
- How do you put together your relative’s application package?
