Do You Have a Fake Job Offer?

A fake job offer is the latest scam targeting those who want to come to Canada. Proceed with caution!

Yes, a genuine job offer from a Canadian employer goes a long way in helping an immigration application. In many cases, it’s the key to success. But it’s also a hard thing to get, especially when you are applying for jobs from your home country. So when you get a job offer, it’s like a dream come true. But is it really true? Or simply too good to be true?

Know the Signs so You Won’t Get Fooled

#1: YOU HAVE TO PAY THE RECRUITER. In reality, the employer is the one who pays the recruiter. If the recruiter asks you for payment to “find a job” for you, it may be a scam. Look into it further before getting on board.

#2: CHECK THE EMAIL ADDRESS. Check the actual email address and not the name of the sender. Is it from a legitimate company? If yes, check the naming convention of the legitimate company. Does your email address follow the same naming convention? If you get many No answers, it could be a fake job offer.

#3: GRAMMATICAL ERRORS. A fake job offer usually contains glaring grammatical errors. That’s a sure sign it’s a fake. The same goes for the work permit, so make sure to check every little thing.

#4: NO JOB INTERVIEW. You know how hard it can be to get a job offer. Yet out of the blue, you get one. And you did not even do a job interview! That’s clearly a fake job offer. Especially if you never submitted your resume too.

#5: DOUBLE-CHECK STATIONERY. Scammers are getting more sophisticated. They may make PDF offer letters with official-looking logos and letter formats. Be careful! Check with the companies and organizations represented by these logos. Confirm that the letter format is correct and that the signatory is a genuine representative of the company or organization.
