Increase in Students’ Work Hours

Students’ work hours have increased to 24-40 hours per week.

Starting this Fall 2024, international students in Canada will be allowed to work for up to 24 hours per week while classes are in session. This is an increase from the previous limit of only 20 hours per week. This increase is intended to help students continue to gain valuable work experience and cope with the rising cost of living, while still having enough time to keep their primary focus on their students.

During school breaks and between programs, international students can work full-time and unlimited, assuming they continue to meet the conditions of their study permit. This is intended to strike the appropriate balance so students have the option to work without compromising academic outcomes.

As international students arrive in Canada, we want them to be prepared for life here and have the support they need to succeed. However, first and foremost, people coming to Canada as students must be here to study, not work.
