4 Tips to Find a Job Faster
Find A Job – this is the first goal of nearly every newcomer to Canada.
Do you know why Canada requires you to have settlement funds? Because it is expected for newcomers to take up to 6 months to fully settle into their lives in Canada. Among others, this includes finding a permanent job. It can be hard to start your career over, where no one understands how prestigious your home university is, how large your former employer is, or how great your achievements are. However, there are ways to find a job faster. It may not be the usual way you are used to, but it’s the way that works for Canada.
#1: Brush Up on Your Skills
Work experience is great. Work experience plus formal education is even better. Canadian employers appreciate employees who are constantly studying to improve their skills. While still in your home country, look into online programs offered by institutions recognized by Canada. Coursera.org is a good place to start and they have free programs too. A good example is a free program offered by the prestigious University of Toronto on iOS App Development with Swift Specialization.
#2: Win-Win in Volunteering
Canadian employers tend to prefer employees with Canadian work experience. Volunteering is a great way to gain the needed work experience, enhance your resume, grow your skills, and develop your network. If you want to know more and find some volunteer opportunities, the Government of Canada’s webpage is a good place to start.
#3: Avail of Free Settlement Services
If you are a new immigrant moving to Canada, you should do your research as early as possible so that you can act as soon as you arrive. Canada has a great support network in place to help newcomers settle into a new city and find employment. If you want to know what services are available and the different organizations in your area, you can visit the Government of Canada’s webpage. Please note this is for immigrants only and not for international students.
#4: Part-time Jobs are Always Available
If you are an international student, don’t worry. There are always part-time jobs available, even during the pandemic. We keep in touch with most of our students and everyone is working. It is actually harder to say “No” when employers ask you to work more than 20 hours a week than it is to find a job! You will understand what I mean once you are in Canada and you can see the opportunities for yourself. Meanwhile, here are some ideas on well-paying part-time jobs.
One last thing before I go. The first job will usually be whatever you can find because you need the income. It is hard to live in a dollar economy when you are holding a different currency. But don’t stay and be content in your first job. Dream big, aim to work in your professional occupation, and don’t stop looking. Canada is an equal opportunity employer and companies want to hire a mix of native-born Canadians and visible minorities. Those who succeed are those who don’t give up. So chin up! It won’t be as hard as you think.
